Prayer Shawl Ministry
Knit Together: Tuesday October 8, 2024 at church 2:30 - 4 pm. Bring your project; stimulating conversation and great company is furnished. Guests are always welcome and yarn is available.
Our next prayer shawl dedication will be scheduled this Fall during worship at 10:30.
Prayer shawls are displayed at church if you want to give one to someone.
Anyone may give a prayer shawl at any time, to anyone; no cost, just caring.
Prayer Shawls
At our last prayer shawl dedications May 12 and June 14, 2024 we blessed 17 new shawls. We gave away 18 prayer shawls to LGBTQ+ individuals and allies at the Pride Festival at the Lakefront on June 15, 2024. This year we staffed our own tent as an outreach to show our acceptance and welcome. Thanks to all who helped out. In February 2024 we gave expectant Family Promise Moms two baby prayer shawls. In December we again gave several scarves to the Center of Concern. We included shawls in some of our Christmas gifts to Center of Concern and Family Promise families Prayer Shawl # 650 was dedicated April 23, 2023 at our forty-sixth dedication. (Inception October 2011.)
In December 2022 we again donated hats, scarves and knitted cotton dish clothes to Operation Merry Christmas sponsored by the Geneva Center of Concern.
In May 2021, we delivered seven wrapped prayer shawls to Geneva Police Department for their use as needed. We pray these will bring comfort to people in need. We plan to replenish these as time goes on.
We donated 11 fleece blankets, 9 hat & scarf sets, and 58 hats to Operation Reindeer in Mexico, Oswego County in November 2020. Special thanks to Deb Iddings, Pat Schiller and Bettie Olsen for their contributions.
On Mother's Day, May 12, 2019 we offered knitted cotton dish cloths to the congregation. Thanks to a generous donation of cotton yarn from Bill Hirons, we are able to supply dish cloths to the Center of Concern at Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as offer them here. We donated a dozen dish clothes to Family Promise in August 2020. We donated 480 dish clothes in 2021 – 180 for Thanksgiving and 300 for Christmas baskets.
You might notice "scarves-in-process" in baskets at the back of the sanctuary. If you listen better while your hands are busy, feel free to pick one up and knit during the service. Please return to the basket so it is there for the next service. We donate completed scarves to Operation Merry Christmas in Geneva.
